Juicing for lazy people

The biggest reason juicers go unused is because, for some people, juicing is too time-consuming. Here are ten tips to make juicing easier, so you will be more likely to keep that juicer out and in use.

#1Don't bother coring apples and pears

Apple and pear cores won't damage a juicer.  The juicer will simply filter them out.  Just remove the stems and cut the fruit into quarters.

#2 Keep the kiwi peel on

A good juicer will easily filter out the kiwi skin.  Just wash the kiwis well, cut them in half, and juice them.

#3 Don't peel carrots

Peeling carrots is a waste of time.  Not only will you lose valuable viatmins which are present in the skin, you will also lose a little bit of juice. Just make sure to wash them well.  Scrubbing gloves will make this even easier.

#4 Choose a vertical juicer if you prefer something practically self-feeding

If you don't want to have to push everything in to the jucier with a pusher, consider a vertical juicer.  Vertical juicers use gravity to feed the produce directly into the juicing chamber, unlike horizontal juicers which need produce to be pushed in. Our current favorite verticals are the Sana 828 and the Omega MMV.

Note: While vertical juicers are easier to feed than horizontal juicers, keep in mind that horizontal juicers are better suited for root vegetables and greens. Verticals are better suited to juicing fruits.

#5 Use a citrus juicer if you make orange juice often

Peeling oranges or tangerines can be a pain.  If you like to make a lot of citrus juice or pomegranate juice, consider a citrus juicer or attachment. With this type of juice, you don't need to peel the fruit.  Just slice it in half and juice it.

There are three types of citrus juicers:

Citrus juicers are also the easiest way to make pomegranate juice.

#6 Juice the night before

If you're not a morning person, make juice the night before.  Juice will store up to 48 hours, even longer in a vacuum container. Of course, fresh juice is always the best. But if it is made the night before and properly stored, it will be fine in the morning.  Just make sure to use a slow press juicer, as juice from high-speed centrifugal juicers must be consumed immeditely.

#7 Choose a juicer that is easy to clean

The easiest juicers to clean are single-auger horizontal juicers.  This is because there are few parts to clean on a horizontal, and the juicing screen is very small. The fastest to clean juicers we offer are the Sana 606, Sana 707, and Sana 727. All three take less than two minutes to clean, as they just need to be rinsed and the small juicing screen scrubbed with the included cleaning brush.

Just make sure, no matter what type of juicer you have, to clean it right after juicing.  If left to dry, residues can build up that will reduce the juicer's performance.

#8 Choose a juicer that is easy to put together

  • One characteristic of premium juicers is that the parts fit together perfectly. This makes assembly fast and intuitive.
  • The fewer parts, the better.

Once again, horizontal single-auger juicers are the fastest to assemble, because they only have four or five parts. The speed champ is the Sana 727, as it only has four parts (drum, auger, screen, cap) and it uses a one-touch quick-release mounting system.

Note: Never wash juicer parts in the dishwasher.  There is a risk that hot water can soften them, causing them to not fit together perfectly.

#9 Juice from start to finish in 10 minutes

Yes, it's possible to prepare produce, juice it, and clean everything in under ten minutes.  Here's how:

  • Choose produce that doesn't need much preparation. This includes apples, pears, carrots, grapes, kiwi, cherry tomatoes, celery, cucumber, and leafy greens. Mix up to three of these easy to prepare ingredients.  For fast juicing avoid produce that needs to be removed from it's rind or skin, like melons or pineapples. Also, softer fruits like peaches, plums, or currants need to be juiced slowly. If you try to juice them fast, their soft flesh will back up the juicer.

#10 Choose a horizontal juicer if you juice mainly celery

Celery is the most popular vegetable to be juiced these days, as many people are following a daily celery juice regimen for health benefits.  If you plan to juice mainly celery, consider a horizontal single auger juicer instead of a vertical juicer.  That's because vertical juicers have small pulp outlets, which requires celery to be cut into small pieces to avoid clogging the juicer.  Horizontal juicers shoot the pulp out directly, and whole celery stalks can be juiced without a problem.  We recommend the Sana 606, Sana 707, and Sana 727 for the best results with celery.
