How to maximize the shelf-life of fresh juice

While we always recommend that juice should be consumed as soon as possible after juicing, you can safely extend the shelf life and keep most of the nutrients and flavor intact. Depending on the type of juicer, the type of juice, and the storage method, fresh juice can be stored for up to 72 hours.

#1 Use a low speed juicer

If you are using a centrifugal high-speed juicer (the loud juicers that spin at 5000+ rpm), then we recommend you drink the juice right away.  The high speed shredding process of a centrifugal juicer can create heat and oxidation, causing a rapid breakdown of nutrients.  If you are using a slow juicer (a horizontal or vertical auger-type juicer), that juice will stay fresh and nutritious for at least 24 hours if stored in the fridge.  Slow juicers don't create heat or oxidation, preserving the nutrition and flavor of the produce, as qwell as gentrly pressing more juice out of most produce. You can see our selection of slow juicers here.

#2 Use vacuum storage

If you want to keep juice fresh longer than a day, a vacuum pitcher will let you keep juice fresh up to 72 hours.  Just pour the juice immediately after juicing into a vacuum pitcher - fill it at least 80% full to minimize air - and then use the pump which comes with the pitcher to remove air. We offer a slim vacuum pitcher designed to fit in the door of a fridge as well as a larger 1500 ml vacuum container if you want to store bigger quantities. Both of these include a hand pump, and an automatic electric pump is also available.  The new Sana 848 juicer includes the large vacuum container, and is designed for people who prefer to juice less often, and keep juice stored, ready to drink every day.

#3 How to keep juice fresh on the go

In case you'd like to take your fresh juice with you, we recommend using a glass or stainless steel air-tight bottle.  Make sure to fill it as close to the rim as possible, to minimize any air in the bottle.  If you are bringing it to work, make sure to put the bottle in the fridge when you arrive, especially on warmer days. We don't recommend plastic bottles, as the acid in some juices can react with it. Our 700ml glass bottle has a stainless steel lid, and is ideal for taking juice with you.

#4 Use some citrus to keep things fresh

Adding some citrus juice can help keep juice fresh.  The citric acid can retard oxidation, and keep the nutrition and taste intact for a longer time.  Lemons are a great complement for more "earthy" jucies like carrots, beets, ginger, and turmeric. Limes are lighter tasting, and go well with apples or celery. Pineapples are also a great source of citric acid, and go well with just about anything. Unlike lab-produced artificial citric acid (which actually comes from a form of black mold!), natural citric acid found in citrus fruits are a healthy natural antioxidant.
