During menopause, the liver can become overworked as it attempts to clear the blody of excess hormones. Drinking 60-100 ml of fresh beet juice daily can be safer than hormone therapy, which can have a negative effect on the liver. Betaine, a compound found in red beets, has been shown to be protective of the liver by preventing fat accumulation and maintaining proper electrolyte balance.

How to start with beet juice:

  • Beet juice is a potent treatment, and should be started gradually. To begin, don't drink pure beet juice. Instead, mix it with other ingredients like carrots or apples. At the beginning, limit the percentage of beet juice to less than a 1/3 of the juice content.
  • Drink the juice gradually - not all in one gulp.
  • As your body becomes accustomed to the beet juice, gradually increase the amount you drink. Aim for a goal of eventually consuming 60-100 ml of beet jucice three times per day..
  • Beet juice acts as a detox agent. You may intially feel weak, nausea, or headaches in the first few days. If this occurs, decrease the amount of beet juice you consume until your body adjusts and those toxins are expelled.

It's also great for your blood

The detox benefits of beet jucie combines with its naturally high iron content to refresh and cleanse the blood. In addition, the naturally occuring nitrates in beets can reduce blood pressure within minutes of consumption. One study found a 4-5 point reduction in systolic blood pressure among patients who drank beet juice.

How to juice beets:

  • Centrifugal juicers: No special preparation needed for beets. Drink the juice immediately, as the high speed process can cause oxidation.
  • Horizontal cold-press juicers: Cut the beets lengthwise into "sticks"
  • Vertical cold-press juicers: Beets are very hard, so care must be taken when using a vertical juicer. Cut the beets into small peices and feed them slowly into the juicer, waiting for each piece to be juiced before adding the next.
  • Twin-gear juicers: Cut the beets into quarters
