Recently, hemp seed oil has become more popular both as a dietary supplement and a topical application for healthy skin. That is because hemp seed oil contains very high levels of linoleic and alpha-linoleic essential fatty acids. These compounds lubricate and moisturize the skin, and are especially useful in treating the symptoms of eczema, psoriasis, and rashes. Taken internally, hemp seed oil lowers blood cholesterol levels, reduces arterial plaque, and reduces blood pressure.

Great for sensitive skin

Pure hemp seed oil – meaning without any added preservatives or additives – is especially good for sensitive skin. My daughter has very sensitive skin, and is prone to rashes and dry skin. Because her skin is so sensitive, every product we tried to treat her skin just resulted in a rash. The only thing we found to be effective was pure hemp seed oil made into a salve. Now we make it when needed, and it is very simple to do.

Press your own oil

Previously I purchased commercially-prepared hemp seed oil online, but now I press my own using the Sana oil extractor. It is fast and easy to use, and allows me to be sure that my hemp seed oil is 100% pure. Plus I can make just the amount I need.

How to prepare:

Ingredients

  • Hemp seeds (or hemp seed oil)
  • Beeswax

If you are using the Sana oil extractor, slowly add hemp seeds into the hopper until you have the amount of fresh cold-pressed oil you need. The process is very simple. Over gentle heat, melt beeswax into the hemp seed oil in a 1:4 ratio. You can reduce the beeswax to a 1:6 ratio is you prefer a soft ointment, but we’ve found a 1:4 ratio gives a firm, long-lasting salve. Before it cools, pour the mixture into containers and allow to cool. Don’t forget to label them with the name and date.

To use, just apply the salve to affected areas of dry skin and gently rub it in. Unlike most oils, hemp seed oil is non-comedogenic, meaning it is quickly absorbed into the skin.

The salve should retain its effectiveness for between 6-12 months. Keeping it stored in a cool dry place will extend its life. We recommend making a small amount at a time and making a fresh batch whenever you run out.
